Talia: When's the last time you Googled your own business and saw what AI is saying about you? If you haven't, Google's about to make it a lot more obvious to your customers.

Billy Jordan Jr.: Google's testing something called AI Mode—a sidebar right on the search page where its AI summarizes answers and recommends businesses. If you're not showing up there, you aren't in the conversation.

Talia: Okay. That's the episode. Let's get into it.

Talia: Welcome to The BreakPoint Brief, practical conversations about getting found, earning trust, and putting AI to work in a real business. I'm Talia. My job is to ask the questions a busy business owner would ask, and to not let anybody off the hook. Across the table, as always, is the founder of BreakPoint Systems, Billy Jordan Jr.

Billy Jordan Jr.: Good to be here, Talia.

Talia: Today we're talking about Google’s new AI Mode in search. What is it, and what does it mean for whether your business gets found?

Talia: So, in plain English—what is Google AI Mode, and why should a local business care?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Google AI Mode is a new feature Google is testing, where an AI-powered sidebar appears right next to regular search results. Instead of just showing blue links, the AI summarizes answers and recommends businesses directly. If your business isn’t showing up in that AI summary, you’re missing out on where people are starting to look.

Talia: Is this just another version of SEO, or is it something totally new?

Billy Jordan Jr.: It’s related, but it’s not the same. Traditional SEO is about ranking in the regular results. AI Mode is about being named and recommended by Google’s AI. That means the AI has to know your business exists, trust what it finds, and see you as a fit for the question being asked—like “best roofing company near me” or “who can help with Medicare in Charlotte.”

Talia: Can you give an example of a business that might get left out?

Billy Jordan Jr.: A local bakery that’s never updated its website, has no recent reviews, and isn’t mentioned on sites the AI checks—like local news or industry directories. The AI won’t recommend them because there’s nothing for it to pull from.

Talia: So if you’re not keeping your info current and visible, you’re invisible to the AI?

Billy Jordan Jr.: That’s right. The most common mistake is thinking your Google Business Profile alone will do it. It won’t. The AI pulls from a wider set of sources—your site, third-party sites, and what people are actually asking.

Talia: Let me push back. Is this really going to change how people find local businesses, or is it just a flashy sidebar?

Billy Jordan Jr.: It’s changing already. Search Engine Roundtable reported recently that Google is testing this AI Mode sidebar on the main search page. The point is, more people will see AI summaries first—before they even see the regular results. If your business isn’t there, you’re not getting those early clicks.

Talia: But are people actually using these AI features?

Billy Jordan Jr.: They are. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found forty-five percent of U.S. consumers have used AI tools like ChatGPT for local business recommendations, up from six percent the year before. That’s a big jump. And Google’s own AI Overviews are seen by more than two billion people a month, according to Alphabet’s earnings call.

Talia: Does that mean the old ways—ads, bought leads—don’t work anymore?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Those still exist, but they’re not the main game for us anymore. At The Jordan Insurance Agency, we stopped buying leads and running ads. Every call we get now is inbound, from people finding us through search and AI recommendations.

Talia: Is that typical?

Billy Jordan Jr.: No, those results are early and specific to our agency. It depends on your business, your market, and how much work you put in. But the shift to AI in search is real, and it affects everyone.

Talia: Okay, so how does a business actually get named in AI Mode? What are the steps?

Billy Jordan Jr.: First, your website has to be solid—modern, fast, and easy to read. Second, you need to answer the questions people actually ask about your services, in plain language, on your site. Third, you need a presence beyond your own website: reviews, mentions in local news, industry directories, and other trusted sources. The AI pulls from all of these.

Talia: Can you walk me through an example of that in action?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Sure. Think of a family dentist in a mid-sized city. They update their website, answer common questions about insurance and procedures, and get mentioned in a local parenting blog and the chamber of commerce site. When someone asks Google’s AI “who’s a good family dentist near me,” they’re much more likely to be named.

Talia: What’s the biggest thing that trips people up?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Not knowing what questions customers actually ask, so their content doesn’t match real searches. Or they publish once and never update. The AI notices.

Talia: And if you do all this, how soon do you see results?

Billy Jordan Jr.: For my agency, we saw measurable changes within about sixty to seventy-five days, but again, that depends on your business and your effort. Nothing is instant.

Talia: So this is not a set-it-and-forget-it deal.

Billy Jordan Jr.: Exactly. It’s ongoing work. The AI keeps changing, and you have to keep feeding it.

Talia: Okay, Billy. Somebody's listened this far. What should they do Monday morning?

Billy Jordan Jr.: First, Google your own business and see if an AI summary mentions you. Second, check your website—make sure it answers common customer questions. Third, look for where your business is mentioned outside your website, like reviews or local news, and start building more of those.

Talia: And if they'd rather run their business?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Go to breakpointsystems.com and get your free AI visibility report. We'll show you whether AI tools are recommending your business, and your clearest first step.

Talia: That's The BreakPoint Brief. Thanks for listening. We'll see you next time.
