Talia: When was the last time you checked whether AI tools are even allowed to see your website? Because forty-two percent of business sites are blocking AI crawlers right now, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Billy Jordan Jr.: If AI tools can't read your site, they can't recommend you. It's that simple.
Talia: So if you're not showing up in AI search results, it might not be your content—your site could be invisible.
Talia: Okay. That's the episode. Let's get into it.
Talia: Welcome to The BreakPoint Brief, practical conversations about getting found, earning trust, and putting AI to work in a real business. I'm Talia. My job is to ask the questions a busy business owner would ask, and to not let anybody off the hook. Across the table, as always, is the founder of BreakPoint Systems, Billy Jordan Jr.
Billy Jordan Jr.: Good to be here, Talia.
Talia: Today we're talking about a problem most owners don't know they have: why your business might be invisible to AI search, and what to do if your website is blocking the crawlers AI tools use to find you.
Talia: Billy, let's get right to it. What does it mean for a website to "block AI crawlers," and why does that matter for a local business?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Blocking AI crawlers means your website is telling AI tools not to read or index your pages. If that's happening, those tools can't pull your business info or recommend you when someone asks who to call.
Talia: Is this blocking something most owners are doing on purpose?
Billy Jordan Jr.: No, most have no idea it's happening. It can come from security plugins, outdated settings, or a developer who copied a template that blocks crawlers by default.
Talia: How would a business owner even check for this?
Billy Jordan Jr.: The first place is your website's robots.txt file. If you see lines like "User-agent: GPTBot" or "User-agent: Google-Extended" with "Disallow: /", that's blocking those AI tools. Anyone can check this by visiting theirdomain.com/robots.txt.
Talia: Let me push back. If I never told anyone to block anything, shouldn't I be fine?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Not necessarily. Forty-two percent is not a small number.
Talia: So let's say I check and find out my site is blocking AI crawlers. What does it actually cost me if I leave it that way?
Billy Jordan Jr.: AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Bing Copilot use what they can read to answer questions about local services. If they can't read your site, they can't mention you.
Talia: Is that typical? Are AI recommendations really making the difference for local businesses?
Billy Jordan Jr.: It's growing. BrightLocal found forty-five percent of U.S. consumers have used AI tools for local recommendations, up from six percent a year earlier. At The Jordan Insurance Agency, when we opened up to AI crawlers and followed through with the right steps, we saw Bing AI citations jump from a little over a thousand to nearly seven thousand in about three months.
Talia: Early results, not typical, right?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Right, those numbers are specific to my agency.
Talia: What's the most common mistake you see here?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Assuming that showing up on Google Search means you're showing up in AI answers.
Talia: If I want my business to show up in AI search results, what should I actually do after unblocking the crawlers?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Unblocking is just the start. You can make sure your website has information about what you do, who you help, and why someone should trust you.
Talia: So it's not just about being open—it's about being useful?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Exactly.
Talia: Let me push back again. Isn't this just SEO with a new name?
Billy Jordan Jr.: There is some overlap, but AI tools use information differently than traditional search engines.
Talia: Okay, Billy. Somebody's listened this far. What should they do Monday morning?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Check your robots.txt file to make sure you aren’t blocking AI crawlers.
Talia: And if they'd rather run their business?
Billy Jordan Jr.: Go to breakpointsystems.com and get your free AI visibility report. We'll show you whether AI tools are recommending your business, and your clearest first step.
Talia: That's The BreakPoint Brief. Thanks for listening. We'll see you next time.
