Talia: When was the last time you looked at what it really costs to bring in a new customer—and how much of that goes straight to the lead sellers, not your business?

Billy Jordan Jr.: If you’re paying for every lead, your cost per acquisition’s always at the mercy of someone else’s price. When you get found by name, and the call comes straight to you, you control more of that cost yourself.

Talia: Okay. That's the episode. Let's get into it.

Talia: Welcome to The BreakPoint Brief, practical conversations about getting found, earning trust, and putting AI to work in a real business. I'm Talia. My job is to ask the questions a busy business owner would ask, and to not let anybody off the hook. Across the table, as always, is the founder of BreakPoint Systems, Billy Jordan Jr.

Billy Jordan Jr.: Good to be here, Talia.

Talia: Lead prices keep climbing. Today, we're answering the question: How do you actually lower your cost per acquisition when every lead seller seems to raise their rates every quarter?

Talia: Billy, what’s the first thing a business owner should know about cutting that cost per acquisition?

Billy Jordan Jr.: The biggest shift is moving from paying for leads to earning inbound calls through your own visibility. When someone searches for what you do and AI tools recommend your business by name, you’re not competing for the same recycled leads everyone else is buying. That means the cost to acquire each customer isn’t tied to an auction or a broker—it’s about what you invest in being found and trusted.

Talia: But most owners still feel stuck paying for leads. Is it realistic to think you can just stop?

Billy Jordan Jr.: It isn’t overnight. You can start by getting your website in order—make it fast, mobile-friendly, and have clear contact info. Then focus on answering the questions customers actually ask, not just listing services. That’s what builds up your visibility in local search and with AI tools.

Talia: What’s the mistake owners make here?

Billy Jordan Jr.: They skip the basics. If your website loads slow or buries your phone number, even the best content won’t help. You can check this yourself: open your site on your phone, try to book an appointment, and see how many steps it takes.

Talia: Let me push back. Most lead sellers claim they get you in front of “ready-to-buy” customers. Isn’t that worth the premium?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Sometimes, but you’re renting, not owning. When the price goes up, you pay more for the same lead. When you’re found directly, and that call comes to you, you set your own terms.

Talia: So, what actually changes for a business when you stop buying leads and start getting found directly?

Billy Jordan Jr.: You get higher-quality calls and keep more of the margin. At The Jordan Insurance Agency, once we stopped buying leads and shifted to inbound calls, we saw more conversations turn into multiple policies. The calls closed at a higher rate than the bought leads we used to chase. Plus, every call is a real person looking for us by name or for exactly what we do.

Talia: Is that typical? Or is that just insurance?

Billy Jordan Jr.: It’s early and specific to my agency, but the principle holds up for local businesses—when people find you by name, the trust is higher, and you’re not one of five calls they’re making off a list.

Talia: Give me a concrete example outside insurance.

Billy Jordan Jr.: For any local business, if someone searches for your service and AI recommends your business by name, that person’s more likely to call you directly, not fill out a generic form that goes to several businesses.

Talia: What’s the hidden pitfall?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Thinking visibility is a one-time job. AI tools and search engines reward businesses that keep publishing fresh, useful content and keep their info accurate everywhere. If you set it and forget it, you’ll slip down the list.

Talia: What role does AI actually play in lowering acquisition costs—beyond just search?

Billy Jordan Jr.: AI’s changing how people find and choose businesses. BrightLocal found forty-five percent of consumers have used AI tools like ChatGPT to get local business recommendations, up from six percent a year ago. If you’re not showing up in those answers, you’re invisible to almost half the market. But when you are, you’re in the conversation before anyone clicks an ad or fills out a lead form.

Talia: Are businesses really getting named by these tools, or is it still just the big chains?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Local businesses can get named, but only if AI has good data to work with. That means your website needs to answer real questions, your business details have to be accurate everywhere, and you need mentions on trusted industry sites. For The Jordan Insurance Agency, Bing AI citations went from one thousand sixteen in the first thirty-day stretch to two thousand one hundred ninety-five in the second and six thousand eight hundred sixty in the third, with ten thousand seventy-one AI citations in total between July eighth and October fifth, twenty twenty-six. Monthly clicks from Google Search went from one hundred eighteen in June to one thousand two hundred seventy in September twenty twenty-six, and impressions went from thirty-eight thousand eight hundred to two hundred nineteen thousand. But that took doing all eight steps, not just one.

Talia: What’s something listeners can check right now?

Billy Jordan Jr.: Ask an AI tool, “Who’s the best near me?” See if your business comes up by name. If it doesn’t, that’s your signal to work on your visibility.

Talia: Okay, Billy. Somebody's listened this far. What should they do Monday morning?

Billy Jordan Jr.: First, check your website on your phone and make sure it’s easy to call or book. Second, search for your business and your main service on Google and an AI tool—see if you show up by name. Third, update your business info on the major directories and industry sites, so AI and search engines trust your details.

Talia: And if they'd rather run their business?
